April in Prague is the city waking up. Winter is leaving, trees are blooming, terraces are opening and the light changes completely. Compared to summer, when Charles Bridge is a wall of people and hotels double their prices, April is a different world: fewer crowds, better prices and practically the same attractions.

I've been living in Prague for 10 years. I've led tours in April every single one of those years. And what I can tell you is this: April is one of the most underrated months to visit. It has Easter markets, gardens that have just opened, a bonfire festival on the last day of the month that almost no traveller knows about, and a climate that, if you come prepared, is no problem at all.

What you do need is real information. Not the romanticised version from a generic guide, but what the temperature actually is at 10 in the morning when you leave the hotel, what to pack, what's closed and what events are on. That's what I'm giving you here.

Weather in Prague in April

The April climate in Prague can be summed up in one sentence: don't trust anything.

It's a bit mad. It can rain, then sun, then hail, then sun, then rain again, all in the same day. I've experienced this leading tours hundreds of times. It's not an exaggeration. A Tuesday in April can start with clear skies at 10:00, rain at noon, blazing sun at 15:00 and a downpour at 18:00.

That said, numbers help with planning:

WeekLowHighDaylight hours
1-7 April2-3°C11-13°C~13h
8-15 April3–5°C13–14°C~13h 45min
16-23 April5–6°C14–16°C~14h 15min
24-30 April6–7°C16–17°C~14h 40min

The difference between the beginning and end of the month is dramatic: you gain nearly 2 hours of daylight and about 5°C on average. The second half is clearly more stable and warmer than the first.

What the numbers don't tell you

What surprises travellers most is the temperature gap between morning and afternoon. At 8:00 it can be 3°C and at 15:00 it's 15°C. That's a 12-degree difference in the same day. If you're coming from a warmer climate where April already means real spring, Prague is going to feel cold.

Wind is another factor that doesn't appear in the tables. Prague is exposed to westerly winds that make the wind chill 3-5°C lower than what the thermometer reads, especially in elevated areas like the Castle or open ones like Charles Bridge.

As for rain: April has about 10-12 days with some precipitation, but the typical Prague rain this month is intermittent drizzle, not storms. A "rainy" day usually means 2-3 hours of light rain, not continuous downpour. Afternoons tend to be drier than mornings, and the last week of April is the driest of the month.

What to pack

This is where most travellers get it wrong. They come with Mediterranean spring clothing, a t-shirt and a thin jacket, and freeze during the 10:00 tour.

The rule is simple: layers.

  • Waterproof windbreaker, non-negotiable. It's the most useful item you can pack
  • T-shirt + jumper or fleece, to regulate temperature throughout the day
  • Thin gloves and something for your ears, mornings justify it, especially the first half of the month
  • Closed, waterproof shoes, the wet cobblestones in the centre are slippery. Heels and flip-flops are a bad idea in Prague any month, but in April with rain they're outright dangerous
  • Compact umbrella, always in the backpack

You don't need a heavy winter coat. You don't need snow boots. But you do need to be able to put on and take off layers three times a day. That's April in Prague.

What to do in Prague in April

Easter markets

If you come in the first half of April, you'll catch the Easter markets (Velikonoční trhy). The main ones, Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, run from 21 March to 12 April, open 10:00 to 22:00. They're smaller and quieter than the Christmas markets, but they have their own charm: handcrafted decorated eggs (kraslice), Easter sweet bread (mazanec), grilled sausages and Czech beer outdoors.

All the detailed information about markets, traditions and the peculiar Czech pomlázka is in our Easter in Prague guide.

Royal Gardens of the Castle

1 April marks the start of summer season at Prague Castle. The Royal Gardens, Southern Gardens and Stag Moat open their gates after the winter closure. The historic buildings extend their hours by one hour (closing at 17:00 instead of 16:00). If you're thinking about visiting Prague Castle (→ ES-02), April is one of the best months: gardens open, fewer crowds than summer, and the combination of fruit trees in blossom with views of the Vltava is hard to match.

Cherry blossoms on Petřín

Petřín hill has around 2,100 fruit trees in the Seminary Garden (Seminářská zahrada). By mid-April the Japanese cherry trees are in full bloom, intense pink against the city towers. It's the best spot in Prague for spring photos.

Important: the Petřín funicular is closed for renovation until summer 2026. You'll have to walk up from Újezd, about 15-20 minutes. The upside: the cherry trees start from the base of the hill, so you don't need to reach the top to see them.

Walks along the Vltava and Náplavka

With warmer weather, Náplavka, the Vltava riverbank in the Vyšehrad neighbourhood, becomes the meeting point for locals. Weekends bring farmers' markets and food trucks. River cruises also start in April: from 350 CZK (~€14) for a one-hour trip.

Outdoor beer gardens

Prague's terraces and beer gardens start opening in April. The two I recommend: Riegrovy Sady in Vinohrady, a terrace with draught beer, sausages and city views, and Stromovka, Prague's largest park, where you can walk for an hour without seeing a single souvenir shop. They're my favourite spots in spring.

The Letná Beer Garden, with its panoramic view of the bridges over the Vltava, also opens when the weather allows, usually around mid-month.

Čarodějnice: Czech witch-burning night (30 April)

This is what no other guide will tell you about.

On 30 April, all across Czechia they celebrate Čarodějnice, literally "the witches". It's a centuries-old pagan tradition: enormous bonfires are built with a witch effigy on top and set alight at dusk. The witch represents winter; burning her marks the definitive arrival of spring.

In Prague there are three main celebrations:

  • Ladronka (Prague 6), the biggest. Carnival atmosphere: live music, food, beer, costume contest for children. From 13:00 until late
  • Kampa (Malá Strana), the most scenic. Parade across Charles Bridge to Kampa park, children's programme, fire show and main bonfire by the river. Starts around 14:30
  • Náplavka, young crowd, by the Vltava. Bonfire, food trucks, beer

It's free, it's family-friendly, and travellers are welcome. The typical food: špekáček (sausage roasted over the bonfire), langoš (fried bread) and Czech beer. When the bonfire rises and a dense cloud of soot lifts into the air, people cheer, another witch has burned.

In 2026, 30 April falls on a Thursday. If your trip includes that day, don't miss it. It's an experience that virtually no foreign traveller knows about.

Note on Easter accommodation

Easter week (3-6 April) generates a temporary spike in demand. Hotel prices rise to near-summer levels during those days. If your trip coincides with Easter, book accommodation in advance. Outside those dates, April remains mid-season with prices 20-35% lower than June-August.

Also note that the ISU World Figure Skating Championships take place 24-29 March at the O2 Arena, so if you arrive in late March, there may be extra pressure on hotels.

Is April a good time to visit Prague?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: April is a medium-high demand month. In Q2 2024, Prague received over 2 million guests. The city is no secret in spring. But the difference from summer is huge in terms of experience.

The good

  • Fewer crowds. Charles Bridge is walkable mid-morning. Castle queues are 5-15 minutes with advance tickets, not 30-60 like in July
  • Lower prices. 3-star hotels in the centre: €60-120/night vs. €85-200+ in summer. Flights from Spain: from €45-70 return vs. €80-160+ in high season
  • Easter markets until 12 April
  • Nature in bloom. Cherry trees on Petřín, magnolias in the Wallenstein Garden, fruit trees in the Castle gardens
  • Čarodějnice, an event summer travellers miss entirely

The less good

  • Unpredictable weather. You know the drill: layers, waterproof, umbrella
  • Cold mornings. If your flight lands at 7:00, the temperature will greet you with a surprise
  • Some closures. Petřín funicular (renovation), Flora metro (Line A, temporary), Jewish Museum during Pesach

My verdict: April is one of the months I enjoy most for leading tours. It's not May (my favourite) or September-October (ideal in terms of weather + crowds), but it's clearly above average. If you can choose within April, the second half is more stable and warmer. If you're coming during Easter, prepare for more people around the markets.

What to keep in mind: closures and schedules

National holidays

  • Good Friday (3 April): a holiday since 2016. Large shops in the centre usually open normally. Banks and government offices close. Public transport: Saturday timetable (reduced frequency)
  • Easter Monday (6 April): shops over 200 m² must close by law (shopping centres like Palladium, Chodov, Nový Smíchov). Small shops, pharmacies and station shops stay open. Public transport: Sunday/holiday timetable

Specific closures in 2026

  • Prague Jewish Museum: closed 2-4 April and 8-9 April (Pesach). If you want to visit the Jewish Quarter, schedule it for 5 April (Easter Sunday) or from 7 April onwards
  • Petřín funicular: closed for renovation until summer 2026. Walk up: ~15-20 minutes from Újezd
  • Flora metro station: temporarily closed (Line A). Use adjacent stations

What operates normally

  • Prague Castle: open every day, summer hours from 1 April (buildings until 17:00)
  • Restaurants and cafés: no restrictions, especially in tourist areas
  • Easter markets: open every day including holidays
  • ODISEA free tours: every day, rain or shine. We've never cancelled a tour due to weather

Free walking tours in April

Our tours operate every day of April without exception. Rain, sun, hail, doesn't matter. In 10 years we haven't cancelled a tour because of the weather.

If you want to organise your visit efficiently, check our what to do in Prague in 2 days itinerary (→ ES-12). April has a concrete advantage over summer: smaller groups. In July you might have 25-30 people in a group. In April, outside Easter, it's common to have smaller groups. That translates to a more personalised experience, more questions, more interaction, more flexibility.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cold in Prague in April?

For someone from a warmer climate, yes. Highs range between 11°C and 17°C depending on the week, and lows drop to 2-7°C at night. The wind on Charles Bridge and at the Castle makes it feel worse. It's not winter, but it's not Mediterranean spring either. Bring layers, a waterproof windbreaker and closed shoes.

Does it rain a lot in Prague in April?

About 10-12 days of the month have some precipitation, but the typical April rain is intermittent drizzle, not storms. A "rainy" day usually means 2-3 hours of light rain, not all-day downpour. Afternoons are drier than mornings. With a compact umbrella and a windbreaker you're covered.

What clothes to wear in Prague in April?

Layer system: t-shirt + jumper or fleece + waterproof windbreaker. Closed, waterproof shoes (wet cobblestones are slippery). Thin gloves and something for your ears in the first half of the month. Umbrella always in the backpack. You don't need a heavy winter coat, but you do need to be able to put on and take off layers several times a day.

Is Prague worth visiting in April?

Absolutely. April combines Easter markets, open gardens, cherry blossoms, lower prices than summer and manageable crowds. The weather is variable, but with the right clothing it limits nothing. It's one of the best months to visit the city if you want to avoid the summer crush of June-August without missing any major attraction.

Are there Easter markets in Prague in April 2026?

Yes. The main markets at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square run from 21 March to 12 April 2026, open 10:00 to 22:00. Smaller markets (Mariánské, Náměstí Míru, Na Kampě) also operate during that period. All the details in our Easter in Prague guide.
